The Igbos are traditional and cultural people. Igbos are almost in every part of the world and they practice their culture and tradition thereafter. Below are topics about the Igbos. Feel free as you go through the topics.
ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE IGBOS
So many historical explanations has come up to be the truth of the origin of the Igbos, but indeed no one can say exactly where the Igbos originated.Theories has not been able to prove it beyond reasonable doubts. Evidents and arguments presented here does not claim the whole right of the origin of the Igbos rather the interpreters believed to summerize in different ways, the Igbos originated. Though geographically, oral explanations, Skeletal evidences and traditional theories , Igbos are believed to have originated as theoritically provided below.
"Igboland is the home of the Igbo people and it covers most of Southeast Nigeria. This is divided by the Niger River into two unequal sections - the eastern region (which is the largest) and the midwestern region. The river, however, has not acted as a barrier to cultural unity; rather it has provided an easy means of communication in an area where many settlements claim different origins. The Igbos are also surrounded on all sides by other tribes ( the Bini,Warri, Ijaw, Igala, Tiv, Yako and Ibibio). Analysis of the sources that the are available (fragmentary oral traditions and correlation of cultural traits) have led to the belief that there exists a core area of Igboland, and the waves of immigrant communities from north and west planted themselves on the border of this core area as early as the ninth century. The core area-Owerri,Orlu and Okigwe-formed a belt, and the people of this area have no tradition of coming from anywhere else. Migration from this area in the recent past tended to be in all directions, and in this way the Igbo culture gradually became homogenized. In addition to this pattern of migration from this core area, other people also entered the Igbo territory in about fourteenth or fifteenth centuries. The first contact between the Igboland and Europe came in the mid-fifteenth century with the arival of the Portuguese. From 1434-1807 the Niger coast acted as a contact point between Africa and Europe traders, begining with the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally English. At this stage there was an emphasis on trade rather than empire building, in this case the trade consisting primarily of Igbo slaves. With the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 came a new trading era, concerntrating on industry ( palm products, timber, elephant tusks and spices). At this point the British began to combine aggressive trading with aggressive imperialism". (Source: www.faculty.ucr.edu/~legneref/igbo.htm)
It was also believed that the first branch of the Igbos originated from the Jewish people that wandered through some African countries like Tchad before 9th century A.D. Those Jewish Igbos are believed to have the same tradition like the Jews of the Eastern World namely: Nris,Aros,Igbo Ukwu, the Otuochas, e.t.c. The Nri people of Igboland have a creation myth which is one of the many creation myths that exist in various parts of Igboland. Archaeological evidence suggested that Nri hegemony in Igboland may go back as far as the 9th century. Another origin of the Igbos are believed to be the Benin or Oduduwa origin. Oduduwa being regarded as the father of the Yorubas and originated fron Benin Kingdom that lived at the River line area of Ika Igbo in the 16th or 17th century A.D. (the Anioma Igbos). There was also the believe that the third Igbo origin is the Benue River Region origin, these Igbos migrated from Benue to avoid the Fulani slave trade in the 17th century A.D and settled in Igbo belt.
